Memorial Day weekend has had a fixed shape in Moab for three decades. Canopy tents lined up across Swanny City Park, pottery and jewelry tables under the cottonwoods, a beer garden pouring Moab Brewery pints, and a stage where local actors tried to out-shout the wind. The organization that helped catch Grassroots Shakespeare, the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, has been doing this kind of quiet load-bearing work since 1997, when the City of Moab converted a vacant 1920s church at 111 East 100 North into a community arts building. The city's own calendar shows the July 10 Arts & Ag date lining up with the Moab Free Concert Series, a summer-long run of live music at Swanny Park put on by Friends of the Moab Folk Festival, the same nonprofit that runs the town's Folk Festival every November. It's the same handful of organizations threading through the calendar under different names. That's the pattern the festival's absence exposed. It's an Art Walk night, and per Moab Sun News's weekly digest, it's also the night the Moab Free Concert Series brings Bobby Alu to the Swanny Park stage, with The Nanites opening at 6 p.m. Downtown to the park is an easy walk, which is presumably why the two got scheduled for the same evening.
The same night closes out the Smithsonian's Voices and Votes exhibit at the Moab Arts Center with a reception. The exhibit's local contribution, according to the same digest, ended up with 40 recordings and 102 write-ins from Moab residents. That's a small number in absolute terms, but for a town this size it's a real sample of people who showed up to put something in writing about what a museum exhibit asked them to weigh in on.
Look further out and the fall calendar keeps the same shape. The Moab Museum has hosted an annual Red Rock Arts Festival that typically caps the Art Walk season each fall with a juried show, food trucks, and live music, and it's expected to run again this year. The Moab Folk Festival itself lands November 6 through 8 at Star Hall, run by the same Friends of the Moab Folk Festival that books the summer concert series.
